"THOU ART THE GOD WHO GIVETH"

Margaret Fraser

Thou art the God who giveth

         To every star a name;

Their radiant host Thou countest

         And none of them the same.

Thou art the God who giveth

         To him that hath no strength,

Thy power and might renewing

         To meet the journey’s length.

Thou art the God who giveth

         Unto the weary rest;

As coming unto Jesus

         They, in His yoke, are blest.

Thou art the God who giveth

         To thy beloved sleep,

When sorrows press upon us

         Renewing slumber deep.

Thou art the God who giveth

         A song, though dark the night;

The heart, though sore and troubled,

         Can find in Thee delight.

Thou art the God who giveth

Thy calming perfect peace:

“Let not your hearts be troubled”

And fear and doubting cease.

“He giveth grace and glory”,

         Divine adorning fair,

Like Jesus, priceless favour;

         No honour could compare.

Thou art the God who giveth

         The wisdom that we need.

Blest Counsellor is Jesus –

         In wisdom’s way He’ll lead.

Thou art the God who giveth

         To us eternal life;

We have it now in Jesus

          ‘Midst scenes of death and strife.

Thou art the God who gavest

         Thy well beloved Son;

As purposed in past ages

         Thy will was fully done.

He gave Himself to save us:

         My body given for you”:

Such love that love of Jesus

         So tender and so true.

Thou art the God who giveth

         Thy Spirit – gift sublime –

To those who in obedience

         Accept Thy word divine

We learn it is more blessed

         To give than to receive,

But such surpassing giving

         We scarcely can conceive.

The earth is Thine in fulness.

         What can we give to Thee?

Ourselves in full surrender –

         Thine for eternity.
